Gypsy Costume is a Hip Way to Go
Looking for an easy Halloween costume that’s loaded with a flair for the romanticist? A gypsy costume is your answer!
So many girls are simply born with romantic ideals and are drawn to images of the ladies of past centuries, who seem to embody their fantasies of a more perfect world. The gypsy women were of a nomadic and adventurous spirit, known for their clothing in vibrant colors, well adorned with costume jewelry, flowing hair and a somewhat reckless abandon for a free existence, marked with lots of music and dancing, along with their own sense of fashion. Gypsy women were trend setters, not fashion slaves. If you’re scratching your head for Halloween costume ideas for your girl, the gypsy costume is certainly worth a mention. If she has just a couple of ounces of that romantic idealism, you might find that the idea of the gypsy costume ignites her imagination.
To spark some interest and gather some ideas, try doing a Google image search on ‘gypsy costumes’. Select several of the most exciting examples and print them out. Putting together a stunning gypsy costume is one of the easiest of homemade Halloween costumes, yet has the greatest panache.
Your basic costume begins with a peasant styled blouse and a bright skirt. The peasant blouses are currently in fashion, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a plain top. You can check out the thrift and retro shops for some good finds. The retro shops often have a stock of elaborate petticoats from the 1950s. All you need is a box of dye to turn that petticoat into an authentic gypsy costume piece. The brighter, the better. Purple, magenta, red, aquamarine or yellow.
Now you’ve got your basic costume. It’s time to accerorize and create the magic. Scarves and more scarves are essential components of the successful gypsy costume. Scarves may be used as headbands, belts or arm, wrist and ankle decorations. Plain or patterned, this accessory adds punch to your costume effect. Use scarves liberally!
As for jewelry, a number of bangle bracelets and perhaps (depending on the age of your gypsy), a pair of outrageous earrings are in order. Look for concho belts in the costume jewelry section to add some of that adventurous spirit to your gypsy costume.
Castanets are another excellent accessory, both inexpensive and easy to find. Cha-cha-cha!
If your little gypsy has short hair, there’s nothing like a long and flowing Halloween wig to give your gypsy the authentic look. Get a couple of sturdy hair combs, embellished with faux diamonds, to create the genuine look of the romantic Gypsy, whiling away her time in dance, music, adventure and beautiful garb.
You can see that, for just a few dollars, you can create a gypsy costume that will live on in your child’s memory for years to come. Ah, to be a child again.

Group Costumes for Halloween
What could be more fun than dressing up in a group Halloween costumes with all your friends? Naturally the best way to show off a group Halloween costume would be at a parade or Halloween festival. But even making the rounds of a couple of parties in group Halloween costumes can be a great way to spend the holiday.
The first thing to think of for any type of group Halloween costumes would be your theme. What does your group of friends all have assessable to wear? If you all work in a hospital, wearing scrubs would be an easy idea. Splash them with some red food coloring and tell everyone that you all just got off work. Thats sure to raise a few eyebrows! You could also simply dress everyone in Hawaiian shirts and go as Jimmy Buffet Parrot Heads. Or maybe have everyone wearing tie-dyed shirts and going as Grateful Dead Dead Heads. Depending on how many people are in your group you could all wear puffy shirts and matching polyester pants and go as the Partridge Family. Those are just a few possible musical theme group Halloween costume ideas.
Other group Halloween costumes are wearing reflective work crew vests and have everyone carry around a trash bag and go as community service road crew. If you really want a challenge you can all wear prison jumpsuits, chain your ankles together and go as a chain gain. Or wear the same prisoner garb without the chains but splash some mud on and go as escaped prison gang. Keeping up the corrections theme, you could have a couple of your group dressed as prison guards to complete the effect.
Another group Halloween costume would be to adapt what would be considered a traditional group for your friends. For instance you can all dress up in the same tight fitting pink ballerina outfits and go as the Chorus of Swan Lake. This could be especially fun for the male members of your troop! You can go retro by dressing up as The Village People. It would be easy to do a new version of the Mickey Mouse Club. You just need to have everyone get a pair of Mouse Ears and sweatshirt with their names printed across. These can be your real nicknames or you can get very creative.
The thing to keep in mind with group Halloween costumes is to have fun. This is usually a two part party: the first part is planning the group costume and the second is in the execution. Just be sure to take plenty of pictures!

Finding Great Fifties Costumes
Dressing up for Halloween is equal parts art, shopping and imagination. Luckily, with all of the costume shops online now, you can browse through thousands and thousands of Halloween costumes for ideas and inspiration without even leaving your house. Coming up with costume ideas are tricky, but there is one route you can go to get really great costumes that are unique, clever and original: period costumes. This year, I am looking at one such period idea in particular. I am looking at fifties costumes.
Fifties costumes offer a wealth of ideas and a variety of costumes for both men and women. When I approach period costumes, I like to start with simply that – what were people wearing in that period of time. Fifties costumes are a particularly fertile ground for modern costumes based on everyday clothing from the 50s.
If you want something else for fifties costumes, there are still plenty of ideas. The most common fifties costumes are, of course, the poodle-skirt for girls and the greaser look for guys. These include the great accessories, like saddle shoes and leather jackets. You can really invest a fair amount of time to elevate the costume to another level and really wow people. These have been popular fifties costumes for decades now, and very few Halloweens go by without seeing a handful of people using these costumes for themselves.
Personally, I like thinking of other choices for fifties costumes: specifically, celebrities. Two of the most popular celebrities happen to be fifties costumes: Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. There are of course other celebrities from the fifties, including James Dean.
However, dressing up like celebrities can be difficult. My favorite idea for fifties costumes is to dress up like characters from famous movies either set in or shot during the 1950’s. This is a great way to go for the period look while still having a lot of fun. For instance, dressing up as Marlon Brando in On the Riverfront, is a good option instead of the daunting task of dressing up as a Marlon Brando.
Whichever way you might choose to approach fifties costumes, you should be in great shape. The whole part of Halloween is to have fun pretending to be someone else for just a couple of hours, and there is no shortage of great ideas for fifties costumes to help you do precisely that.

Cheap Halloween costumes
So youve gotten an invitation to a Halloween costume party and youve got no idea what to dress up as. Welcome to the club. Hundreds of people are faced with this same dilemma every year and still manage to rise to the occasion by creating a truly memorable and cheap Halloween costume.
The very definition of a cheap Halloween costume is one that isnt going to cost a lot of money or cause a lot of stress. This could be a simple as going as yourself by wearing what you would wear on a typical night at home. Who are you supposed to be? youll be asked to which you can reply, Im me. If youre the type of guy who never dresses up then dusting off your suit and wearing that would be a great surprise. Or perhaps youve been a bridesmaid and were forced to wear a hideous dress. That would be a laughable and cheap Halloween costume provided the bride wont be at the party!
Among the other cheap Halloween costumes is your perennial sheet-over-the-head-ghost. You can opt for the classic white sheet ghost but think outside of the box. A purple sheet could mean youre Princes ghost. A floral printed sheet could mean youre a flamboyant ghost. You can be an eco-friendly ghost with a green sheet or ghost of your childhood past with a superhero printed sheet. Of course you can use that same sheet theme and with a little readjustment use it as a toga. Anybody remember toga parties? How many sheets were ruined for those?!
Another cheap Halloween costume idea is to raid the closet of your spouse. Finding whatever bizarre, odd looking or just plain silly shirt or dress they have tucked away can be just the ticket for creating your own cheap Halloween costume.
You can also use a black t-shirt as a blank canvas to create a cheap Halloween costume. Try hot gluing empty plastic bottles to the shirt and go as your recycle bin. Or duct tape your newspapers for the same affect. You could put an empty moving box over your head and go as an empty moving box. Are you sensing the pattern here?
One of the most successful and cheap Halloween costume ideas could be literally waiting until the very last minute then grabbing whatever you can slap on and go as last minute slap on costume. Sure the folks with the expensive rentals might win the big costume contest but who is going to have more fun? The person who has to pay big bucks for a costume and return it the next day or the person who just has to toss their cheap Halloween costume into the garbage?

Consider the Best Halloween Costumes For Any Age
Some costumes you find are best left for adults, as they can have a sexy theme to them. At times, you may find these in a smaller size, suggesting that teens or children can wear them, but you should firm when you say no. Instead, think of ideas for the best Halloween costumes for any age. This means that any one of any age can wear the costume without someone thinking it is inappropriate or sends the wrong message. You do not want your thirteen year old out there in a French maid outfit, but that does not mean she cannot go in something similar but that is more tasteful.
The common ideas can work for the best Halloween costumes. These would be a vampire, mummy, ghost, or perhaps a witch. These are fun, but not everyone wants to go with something that seems common. What you can do is to make each costume your own. You can take any type of common costume and make it into something that can be called the best Halloween costume going at the moment. You can do this for any age group. Don’t go with the vampire look of the moment which has probably been inspired by a movie or show but make up your own style for a really great looking costume.
You may not think that a common theme is the best way to go if you want to come up with the best Halloween costume ideas for an event. No matter what age, you can find some very neat items that are going to blow people away. What you have to do is to make the time to shop around with an open mind. If you have just one idea, you are going to have a hard time finding the items you want. If you have a few ideas or a vague idea, you can see what is out there and then choose the best of what you find for your best Halloween costume ideas.
Children often have the biggest imagination when it comes to coming up with the best Halloween costumes. However, they may also be at an age where they want to do what everyone else they know are going to do. That can be hard when you want them to wear something original. If they want to be the same movie character as everyone else, guide them in a different direction. Ask them if they would like to be a different character from the same movie. At times, this can work. Then you can go about making up a unique version of the costume that they want.
Remember that the best Halloween costumes do not have to be the sexiest ones. Some men and women go the sexy route hoping that will win them a prize as the best costume at a party or event. What matters more is how original and well thought out your costume might be. Some of the best ever made have been ones where you can not tell who is inside because so much of the body is covered. Remember that showing skin may get some attention, but that too has been done to death. Instead, rely on your wit and your sense of humor to come up with your ideas for the best costume ever.

Adult Halloween Costumes Ideas
Last year American consumers spent over 5 billion dollars on Halloween. Thats 5 billion dollars worth of candy, decorations and costumes. All of that spending breaks down to an average of around sixty-six dollars per person. But you dont have to break the bank in order to come up with a great adult Halloween costume idea. A few things to keep in mind are where youll be wearing your costume. If youre going to an outdoor event such as a parade consider the possible weather conditions. If youre headed off to a Halloween party make sure you pick an outfit that you wont mind wearing for a couple of hours.
You first stop for a fun adult Halloween costume idea should be your very own closet. Surely tucked away amid the sweaters, shoes and shirts are a couple of outfits that can best be described as what was I thinking? This could mean an extremely loud Hawaiian shirt that you add a cheep grass skirt to and go as the wacked out tourist. Or maybe youve got favorite disco outfit from the actual disco era that you can dust off and go as, well, as yourself from 1977!
If your closets dont reveal any substantial adult Halloween costume ideas, head off to the store but not necessarily the costume store. You could spend fifteen dollars at the 99 Cent Store and buy fifteen items. Then merely attach these items to a shirt and jeans with safety pins and go to a Halloween party as the 99 Cent Store. You could also look up the closest outlet for medical supplies and pick up a pair of scrubs. Worn clean and you go as a doctor. Splashed with red food coloring and you go as a doctor who had a very bad day. There are also the army supply stores for the old stand-by of camouflage pants and shirts. You may also consider thrift stores to find some outrageous adult Halloween costume ideas. Those are perfect places for men who want to go in drag and need a cheap, big size dress.
If youre feeling very creative another perfect adult Halloween costume idea would be to go as a zombie. You may think this requires a lot of work but actually all you need to do is get some theatrical make-up, cover your face with white base, darken circles under your eyes then grease up you hair. And no matter what outfit you wear, just add the word zombie such as zombie bride, zombie businessman, zombie jogger. You cant go wrong with a zombie!

Adult halloween costume ideas
Adult halloween costume ideas can come in all shapes and sizes. You can go with the traditional halloween costumes – think ghosts, ghouls, witches and mummies – or you can go with something new and unique. Or you could split the difference, going with something new but not unique at all. Think Michael Jackson or another recently deceased celebrity.
That’s one of the favorite tropes for adult halloween costume ideas these days: Going as someone who recently died. It’s got the right amount of creativity combined with plenty of “that’s sick!” to make it an eye-catcher. Michael Jackson is obviously a great one, as there are about ten different looks you could go with, all of them hilarious if pulled off right.
Think about it. You could be the most recent version of Michael Jackson, lily-white and missing his nose (obviously you shouldn’t cut off your own nose, but you can wear the mask like MJ did for the last few years of his life). You could go with late 1980s Michael Jackson, he of the leather jackets, skin-tight pants, jheri curl, and bulky metal accessories. If done right, you could even bring your own stuffed chimpanzee with you. You remember Bubbles, right? Jackson’s chimp companion from the late 80s/early 90s? That’s a costume everyone would recognize.
Then there’s the “Thriller” era Michael Jackson, he of the red leather jacket, the white socks, black shoes and midriff bearing t-shirt. Or the outfit from the “Billie Jean” video. In the realm of adult halloween costume ideas, these are two that are sure to be recognized by most people.
Of course you don’t have to go as a dead celebrity. Some people like to go as concepts, like “postmodernism” or “alcoholism.” My girlfriend and I were thinking about how to come up with a good costume for the latter. I would go as a martini – my head would be the olive, and we’d figure out how to build a glass around that – and she would go as an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. We haven’t hashed out the idea fully, but it’s something we’re working on and will continue to do so as the season approaches.
These aren’t the only adult halloween costume ideas to consider, though. There’s plenty out there if you do some online research, ideas old and new to get your creative juices flowing. Plus there’s tons of “how-to” guides to give you what info you need to construct your costume on your own.

Halloween costume ideas
Halloween costume ideas aren’t hard to come by if you’re willing to be a little bit creative. It’s understandable if you don’t want to go as one of the typical Halloween costumes of lore – whether it be the ghost or mummy, or witch or vampire, or even something more recent like “sexy nurse” or “fireman.” Those are all kind of played out, though it should be said that the classics never really go out of style permanently. A good ghost or ghoul will still win you plaudits if done correctly.
That said, it’s the outside-the-box Halloween costume ideas that usually win the most praise. Halloween these days is less about spooky stories and more about coming up with a costume that best expresses your individuality. For some that means a modern take on classic Halloween costume ideas, but for others that means going in a new direction entirely.
As an example of what I mean by “new direction entirely,” consider that a few years ago I was at a Halloween party where one of the partygoers dressed up as “Postmodernism.” That’s not a person or a place, or something you can even have a mental image of. It’s an abstract intellectual theory that may or may not have any bering on the proceedings you’ll indulge in that evening.
I was blown away at the creativity of the idea. This was someone who’d really taken the time and the effort to come up with Halloween costume ideas that were unique and wholly original. “Postmodernism” was something he could play around with, creating his own illusion of what the idea meant and therefore what his costume should be. It was a coup on his part to come up with “postmodernism” as his costume, since the postmodernist movement was designed to deconstruct and therefore undermine traditional thought and convention in the arts. Kind of made it a 100% cinch to be a great Halloween costume with the barest of effort once the first wall – the wall of creative thought and breaking through the barriers of convention – was knocked down.
The inherent irony then is that he used postmodernist theory to create a corporeal (and thererore modern) “Postmodernism” Halloween costume. It worked on so many levels!
If that’s not your bag, you can still apply the same type of critical thinking to this year’s costume. Maybe rather than going as a critical movement you can go as an artistic movement – you are “pointilism,” or Picasso’s “Blue Period.” Or something else entirely – there’s a world of Halloween costume ideas out there for you to discover.
